SEO Link Wheel

by D. Morgan Henley on January 2, 2012

Most online marketers are aware of how search engine optimization (SEO) plays a critical role in getting a website to rank well in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages). There are many different SEO techniques that can be utilized, in both on-page and off-page optimization. This post will look at an off-page technique that I have found effective in getting higher in the SERPs and pagerank.
One of my favorite search engine optimization tips is creating what is known as a Link Wheel. Basically, a Link Wheel is a bunch of websites that are owned by an individual or organization, and are linked together. I use free Web 2.0 sites, such as HubPages, Squidoo, WordPress.com, and Blogger, in building my Link Wheels. There are dozens of these places that offer free websites. This is how I use free websites to promote my money site.
The money site is the hub of the wheel, and all of the Web 2.0 sites (I call them spoke sites) have articles related to the page on the money site that I want to rank. Each site has a keyword rich anchor tag on a hyperlink pointing back to the money site page. There is debate on whether or not the spoke sites should also have links to each other. The debate stems from the idea of link juice. In theory, link juice is bled off by linking to another site. Supposedly, a webpage possesses a finite amount of “link juice”, which is depleted a little with each outgoing link and enriched a little with each incoming link. My idea on the matter is that it doesn’t hurt to link the spoke sites.
The process starts out by creating a website utilizing a free Web 2.0 property. This site will have an article, or post published on it, with a link in the article pointing to the money site. Next another site is created with another Web 2.0 property. This site also has a relevant post with keyword anchor linking to both the money site and the first spoke site. The process continues, with more and more Web 2.0 sites (all free) with links to both the money site and the previously created spoke site. When the desired number of sites have been created, the first spoke links to the last and the wheel is complete.
